One of the places I wanted to visit the most in Okinawa was Sefa Utaki. It is a traditional sacred place in Okinawa, and at the same time, it is a place designated as a World Heritage Site. It has a deep connection with the royal family of the Ryukyu Kingdom.

Sefa Utaki, located in Nanjo City on Okinawa’s main island, stands as a sacred site revered by the Ryukyu Kingdom. From 1429 to 1879, this hallowed ground witnessed pivotal ceremonies, including the enthronement of Ryukyuan kings and prayer rituals. In 2000, it was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site as part of the Ryukyu Kingdom Gusuku and Associated Sites.

Sefa Utaki exudes an air of mysticism, dotted with unique structures crafted from Ryukyuan limestone and natural rock formations serving as sacred altars. The most prominent site, Sanku (Three Pagodas), holds immense significance as a symbol of the Ryukyuan Kingdom’s authority. The entire Seifa Utaki is considered a divine realm, and visitors are expected to approach with reverence and respect.

- As a sacred site of the Ryukyu Kingdom, iti remains partially active for ceremonial purposes. Visitors are requested to dress and behave respectfully.
- There are no shops or restrooms within the compound. Please bring your own drinks and snacks.
- Protect yourself from the sun with a hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen.
